First Implementation of IMPACT in China Officially Kicks Off in Synergizing with the Fourth Youth Safe-Driving Program sponsoring by Continental China

Shanghai, China, 25 October 2015 - Today, the Sino-European program named IMPACT officially kicked off its first implementation in Shanghai, China. The program was synergizing with the Fourth Youth Safe-Driving Program sponsoring by Continental, a leading technology company. Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Spiritual Civilization Construction Office, Communist Youth League Shanghai Municipal Committee, Traffic Police Corps of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, as well as university volunteers, Safe Kids (China), and around 1,000 Continental employees and families. Dr. Ralf Cramer, Member of the Executive Board of Continental AG and President & CEO of Continental China, commented: "Continental has always advocated the 'Safety for Everyone' concept. While we focus on the innovation of safety products and technologies, we continue to emphasize safe driving in our public-interest communications in a bid to popularize the idea of ‘safe driving’ and deliver safer driving experiences to consumers. With the Youth Safe-Driving Training Program, we hope to strengthen our long-term cooperation with Safe Kids (China) and contribute to road safety in China to realize 'Vision Zero' – a future without road accidents."

The concept of “Safe Driving” was transformed into interactive activities during the program to more effectively communicate the principles of road safety to participants. The traffic police is invited to share traffic safety knowledge with the young people present, stressing the idea of road safety, as well as promoting the principles and self-discipline of safe driving. Volunteers from universities in Shanghai acted as ambassadors for interactive onsite activities, encouraging more people to realize the importance of safe driving and grasp the value of correct driving habits. The Youth Safe-Driving Program aims to raise young drivers' road safety awareness and promote proper safe driving habits to reduce traffic injuries. Guided by the theme “Be a Responsible Young Driver”, the program encourages young people to understand and experience the concept of "safe driving" by learning five safe driving habits: no alcohol driving, no speeding, no distractions, driveway safety and use safety belt. According to a study on global road safety by the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people aged 15–29 years. In China, almost one out of every two victims killed in traffic accidents is a young person, according to data released in 2012 by the China Traffic Management Bureau. Continental conducted a Youth Safe Driving Awareness and Behavior Survey in cooperation with Safe Kids (China) in 2014. The results show nearly half of interviewees agree that road accidents are preventable, and nearly 80 percent of them agree that addressing drunk driving and speeding can effectively reduce road injuries. However, nearly 50 percent of young interviewees had been a passenger in a vehicle operated by a drunk driver. The survey demonstrates the necessity of continuing to educate young people and promote safe-driving awareness. Ms. Monica Cui, Chief Representative and Executive Director of Safe Kids (China), said: "We strongly believe there are no 'accidental' accidents, but there are preventable injuries. In the past three years, we have seen improvements in the safe driving cognition and behavior of the young people who were involved in the project. By promoting this program, we hope to prevent traffic accidents by helping more young people and the public develop safe driving habits."
